About
Daya Curley
Accidental Web Builder
In the mid-1990s I worked in the operations department of a San Francisco advertising agency. The company was growing and it was exciting to learn about computers and other systems. The World Wide Web was still in its infancy. Netscape Navigator was the primary browser used by almost everyone.
The company partnered with a sexologist and planned to use this partnership to start their online presence. My boss unceremoniously said to me “We need a website. Do you feel like learning how to do that?”
I was game, and I started with the most basic HTML code in a text editor. I found I liked it, and I kept going.
Web design has been in my life ever since, sometimes as my main business and sometimes as a side gig while I was performing.
Early Success
My first website was designed for a sexologist associated with our company. I’m not going to tell you the domain name because that URL now belongs to a hardcore porn site.
The website was launched during a very narrow window when the short-lived magazine The Web existed. We managed to get a review and my site was called “graphically pleasing and easy to navigate”. To this day this is the goal I try to reach.
Lessons I picked up along the way:
Simple is better
The web isn’t art
Design with the user in mind
Wired for Admin
Long before I built websites, I was the person keeping the office running. My career has taken me through roles in retail operations, small business management, and marketing, handling the administrative and operational work that keeps a business functional day to day.
I've been organizing, coordinating, and problem-solving behind the scenes for as long as I've been online. Longer, actually.
Lessons I picked up along the way:
Details matter more than people think
Reliable beats impressive every time
Good support is invisible when it's working

There are so many things I can do to help, it’s impossible to have a one-size-fits-all pricing menu. Do you want a few hours here and there? Do you want to commit to a certain number of hours per month? The commitment we make to this work can be customized to fit your exact needs. Let’s chat about it!

The nature of web design is rarely straight forward. All of my work is custom and collaborative. I’ve learned over the years that the project scope almost always changes as we go along. Some projects can be scaled back to account for budget limitations. The best first step is to contact me so we can determine if your project is feasible within your desired budget, and if I’m the right choice of person to build it.

Yes, when I build a website from the ground up, Squarespace is the platform I use. I worked with WordPress for a long time, but I realized that WordPress is usually more challenging, harder for clients to update, and ultimately is more expensive since it requires ongoing maintanance. I think Squarespace is the right balance of features and simplicity. I generally get to give you what you want/need. I also think it’s important that you can learn to update it yourself if that’s something you desire.

I started in the mid ‘90s when my boss said “We need a website. Do you feel like learning how to make one?”
I opened a plain text editor and started building simple HTML code…and web design has been in my life in one way or another ever since.
I have clients who have come and gone, and other clients who have been with me for the entire journey.
